Hi there,
I'm writing here for a bit of advice. I have recent been trying to sort through the world coins collection left to me by my great grandfather and have got a bit stuck. Having sorted through my French, U.S.A, Italian and British coins I am left with two large tins full of coins from other countries around the world and I don't really know where to go from here. I am mainly trying to sell off the collection as it has been lying in a cupboard far to long so what I really would like to know is where to start. Are there any particular countries worth looking out for?
Any help or advice would be great, thanks in advance!

I would get a copy of Krause (Standard Catalog of World Coins) from the library. Here in the states most libraries have a copy, though it is a reference book at many libraries so you might have to bring the coins there. Find out what they are and generally what they're worth to get an idea what to do with them. Posting pictures of individual coins here will probably lead to identification and basic pricing info.

I would agree with using a reference book as much as you can and posting pics also.

You can also sort some of the coins by language. For example take all coins that look like they have Arabic and put them in a pile. All the coins with Oriental in another and so on. Most of the coins that have English on them will be easier for you to identify.

Do you know if the coin were acquired on holiday from circulating coins? Or did your great-grandfather buy them from dealers?

Thanks for the advice.
I'm not quite sure how my great grandfather got all the coins but I would guess most of them came from dealers as I seriously doubt he has holidayed in some of the places these coins are from,
eg. Two of the coin I posted earlier I have been informed came from Sudan and Zanzibar!
Thanks for the Idea about categorizing by language. I think I'll give that ago until I can get my hands on a good reference book.

If you can't find a Standard Catalog of World Coins, World Coin Gallery lists values that are loosely based on Krause:

I would also be remiss not to mention that I received a small collection from my grandfather when I was younger. I thought about selling it on more than one occasion to buy something silly like video games. Twenty years later my video games are long-gone, obsolete trash and I sure am happy that I still have those coins!
