New acquisition just arrived! On the smaller side of commemorative medals but the detail is suburb nonetheless! It's a medal commemorating the Treaty of Aix-la-Chapelle in 1748 which ended the War of Austrian Succession.

Description from the National Maritime Museum's website:

Medal commemorating the Peace of Aix-la-Chapelle, 1748. Obverse: Bust of George II (left), laureate, hair long, no drapery. Legend: 'GEORGIUS II . D . G . REX.' Reverse: Britannia seated (right), on the seashore, leans upon her shield, holds an olive branch and a cornucopia, and tramples upon implements of war. On the water are two ships. Legend: 'PAX COMMERCII NUTRIX.' (Peace, the nurse of Commerce.) Exergue: 'PROCLAM . 2 FEB . MDCCXLVIII.' (Proclaimed, 2 Feb. 1748 [O . S .].)

Date made: 1749

Artist/Maker: Kirk, J.

Materials: bronze

Measurements: 35 mm

That has amazing detail and is wonderful condition. It must have spent its entire life with one collector after another. Even the tiny streamers at the ends of the flags are perfect looking.

Nice! Enjoy.

- a stunning medal.

The one main, long curl in the king's hair almost looks like its a 3D tube you could slide the shaft of a pin into.

That is indeed a beauty of a medal.

The designer is Kirk, J. which immediately made me hear this in my head - Kirk. James T. Kirk - in my best william shatner voice.

I digress. The detail on the rear ship is quite amazing and well done. On the closer ship though the detail is very eye catching. Great piece!
