Thanks for the reply and the attribution. Yeah, it didn't jump right out as a fake to me.

Nice find! Things that make me believe it's real: 1. The reverse of the coin doesn't match the drawing in the leaflet. 2. The coin is off-center and irregularly shaped. Most people expect coins to be round and centered. If you are going to make copies, why not copy a better example? 3. Pitting is what I would expect from environmental damage.
Even if it's fake it's quite the conversation piece.

@TC, that would be a great pick-up if it is real!

jskirwin - Nice points! Also the box is a custom fit to the coin and you would probably see more than one of these dished out to employees 55 years ago.

Really a great buy, especially considering the promotional tie in.

Nice grab! I don't think "problem" ancients were especially valuable 50+ years ago, so I could see the company getting real ones for the promo. I have a few ASE's that my parents picked up from a Honda promo event back in the early 2000s--it was a free event and everyone got one, but they were only worth like $5 at the time.

The dream is over. As soon as I opened it, there it was "Replica". With the coin in hand, you can tell. The edge is as smooth as a baby's butt and there's is a also a faint casting seem. I still think it's a great buy for 10 bucks.

Oh well...
I sort of figured that was the image of the last life insurance policy they paid out on without a fight.

Proof of the limitations of photographs and false assumptions. Seller should have mentioned it was a replica given how the word appears in the first line of the handout he included in the photographs. Assuming this was on ebay you likely have a case for getting your money back if you so desire.

I didn't want to spoil the fun for you so I waited until you had it in hand. As soon as I saw it I fully expected it to be a replica produced by one of the companies who do them for museums etc. I have a few and contrary to what someone else said, they copy " rough " coins not shiny perfect ones. WRL are one company but they stamp their replicas, I will dig a couple out for you later.

jskirwin, I agree, he should have said it was a replica. But he seller deals with all estate sale stuff, so I just think he didn't think twice about the posting it. The title of the ebay listing was "Vintage Imperial Dupondius Coin - 1887-1962 Provident Life & Accident Insurance" so I think it was harmless. I'm going to keep it, great buy for a replica.
