This is my first 1/2 cent. I got it from an auction for $39. I like the the overall look - dirty and original but I couldn't see the red discoloration on the obverse (neck) in the auction pics. Anyway, I fear there might be some environmental damage. I do have return privileges. What is that red?

How would you grade this coin? Thanks!

au55ish. The red seems to be an area of uneven toning, much like the darker toning in the hair below the hairband. This can be the result of exposure to different environments. There also appears to be a Cud below the E in CENTS in the reverse. These appear to detract from eye appeal slightly, but the coin is a very detailed, high grade example.

I have to say XF45 ish. I'm not sure that the mark on the reverse is a Cud ... maybe a chip ? Am still learning.

I'm closer to EF-45 as well. Not particularly fond of this.

45 too. $39 is a good price for what this is. It's been cleaned badly and Retoned badly.

I think it's a decent coin. I grade it XF-45. I don't think I can say it's cleaned or suffers from ED without seeing it in hand. I'm also not sold that's a Cud on the reverse. Rather it could just be some built up up dirt. In fact the reverse looks original to me...saying it's cleaned and retoned badly based on these pics is a stretch imo. For $39 it's a great price.

I like it at 39.00 Verdicare would definitely help in my opinion. I'd be happy to have it for 39.00. XF-45 perhaps AU.
