That is great to see. As for debating whether it was deserved - pppffffttttt there will always be dissent from some on any award.

Quote: I am sure there will be some debate as to whether or not the Award was deserved. Unless I am mistaken, it appears that the Awards are automatic in the category, based on the score for the NGC registry sets. So I do not see that there is any basis for debate, unless someone thinks that the NGC grades are wrong. It also appears that that there is an award for every category, and there are quite a number of categories. No category is compared to another, so Canadian $5 coins (this category) are not compared to any other group.

Yes, they receive 'Best in Category' awards but this one received 'Best Modern Set'. This means that of the 10,000 or so Modern Sets (coins minted from 1971-now) competing on the registry, this one has been judged as being the best by NGC and ANA judges. Of the 20 years that I have followed the registry, I've only ever seen this award go to U.S. coin sets, and sometimes Chinese or Australian sets (usually platinum or gold).

Last year one of the winners had a beautiful set of 100 yuan platinum lunar coins. Usually, the 'Best Modern Set' winners have gold eagles, platinum coin sets, Presidential dollars or something along those lines. Usually US stuff. It comes with Award money, but I'm not sure how much.

The owner of the $5 set is to be congratulated for his/her dedication to the hobby; the set in question is clearly very nice and reflects a good eye for quality and the patience necessary to put together a special coin collection. Reviewing the NGC registries, it appears that he/she has assembled quite a few sets of modern high-grade coins and is clearly passionate about putting together nice attractive sets of modern Canadian NCLT.
The hyperbole used by the owner in his/her description of the set can be excused considering the overall enthusiasm for coin collecting displayed.
Congrats Augustus70!

Commems, I started looking through the sets he/she has and it really puts into perspective how many Canadian commemorative coins there are! That $20 Set is MASSIVE!

@JGG: No doubt about it, the number of modern Canadian NCLT pieces that have been released has grown to be huge! It takes a very dedicated collector to assemble so many sets. (Just FYI, many modern Canadian coins are not commemoratives, just topical or themed coins.)
I agree that the number of $20 coins has grown more than any other denomination. The set owner has certainly spent quite a sum assembling the sets listed. I certainly hope he/she enjoys them!
Didn't you previously draw our attention to the $20 sets? I seem to recall a thread or two.

Yes, there is a collector on there named 'Dan Hughes' who actually completed the $20 1988-2016 Canadian Set (incl. plain edge varieties). I believe there are over 320 coins in that series and he had 95% of them in PF70 grade. The three big Canadian Collectors of moderns were: Dan Hughes, Augustus 70, and Martens. Their sets are enormous on the registry and all top grade. If I'm not mistaken, all three announced they were leaving the hobby last year over frustrations with the RCM.
