Hi folks,

I received this as an unidentified group of coins - mostly medieval - from a relative, and by luck identified it as Ottoman empire, early 20th C. However, I can't tell its denomination or exact date. I think it's Abdülhamid II. 15mm dia and copper/nickel coloured.

Can anyone help? I'm curious about what the torches signify - military victory?

Picture shows photographed and scanned versions.

I agree! Although I am not fully convinced this coin is genuine. With a regnal year of 19, this coin would have been made around 1893 in the Gregorian calendar; however, I am pretty sure this is supposed to be a 25 kurus piece. The diameter and overall design is correct for one of those, but the 25 kurus piece is made out of gold. I am not sure what is going on with the edge, and the design looks pretty crude.

Thanks Joseph7420! It's definitely very similar in style to your genuine example, but minor details are different, and it's certainly not gold. The odd serrated edge struck me as odd. As the right-hand pictures show, there is a raised line a couple of mm proud of the coin - more like a casting than a struck coin. Part of a costume...?

I agree with Joseph7420 about the ID.

I do not know what exactly is happening here, but it is very crudely done. The tughra looks rough.
