This square coin appears to be copper, weighs 6.54 grams and measures 15 mm across. It might be from the Malwa Sultanate, and I also believe the Chitor mint under Akbar minted some square coins, but after a fair amount of looking haven't been able to match it up anywhere. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Using the advanced search feature, I searched the Zeno database for square Malwa AE coins of the right weight range, and found some.

It's an excellent match for the picture of this coin:

https://www.zeno.ru/showphoto.php?photo=135044

The caption to this photo says the coin number is M245, a Malwa falus of Baz Bahadur.

However, looking at Goron and Goenka the picture of coin M245 does not appear to me to at all match this coin pictured in Zeno or my coin.

My coin is also similar, but not as good a match, to a Malwa Akbar falus,

https://www.zeno.ru/showphoto.php?photo=124682

and also a Ghiyath Shah falus M87,

So I'm confused.

Any ideas?

Hm... all three coins in those different links look like the same type to me.

In the first picture of each coin, a pretzel-like shape can be seen. Though your coin and the one in the first link have a ribbon-like shape on the very right, I am thinking the other two are more off-struck. Looking at the second pictures in each link, all coins have the same horizontal lines. The first and third link look the same, while the curve above the lines on the second one is slightly different. That could just be a different die used, possibly a different mint, or maybe a different ruler. Although I am unsure about the second one, the first and third definitely look the same.

With everything considered, your coin does look similar to all three links. I cannot seem to find pictures of the piece from Goron and Goenka, but using Malwa as a reference, a similar coin can be found here. Though the weight and dimensions are wrong, Qadir Shah may be a better ruler to look into rather than Baz Bahadur.

Now, if you go to this site and scroll down a lot (a little more than 3/4 of the way down), you can find one coin minted under Qadir Shah, which has a denomination listed as 1 tanka rather than 1/4 tanka. No dimensions are given for that coin, but it would certainly be larger than a 1/4 tanka piece.

IDENTIFIED: Reading the comments in the Zeno database about the first coin listed in the previous comment, namely

https://www.zeno.ru/showphoto.php?photo=135044

others concur that it is a known variant of M245, and a reference to a publication is given. So, even though it doesn't match the photos of M245 in GG, I'm going with the identification of this coin as a variant of M245.

Thank you for your thoughts, Joseph7420. I posted my previous comment before seeing what you wrote. Your suggestions are appreciated. I agree that there are similarities to the coins you mention. This has been a tough one.
