In 1957, an 1894-S Barber dime was found in a junk coin cash box at Gimbel's department store in New York City. Has anyone heard of similar unbelievable circulation finds? What is your best circulation find in terms of its unlikeliness or the rarity of the find?

Received a Mauritius half rupee in change two months after returning to the states after living on that lovely island for three years.

My circulation finds are no where near an 1894-S dime, but in the last five years I've received a 1922 Peace dollar in AU condition and a 1925-S LWC in fine condition. The Peace has been a pocket piece since.

dunno how rare this is, but for me this is pretty stupifying. look at this old canadian quarter, george the fifth, apparently these were minted 1911-1936ish. this one has no date, it's completely worn away from circulation. lol, i've tried and tried to see a date, but it's gone. i got this in change from the automated checkout machine at home depot this past summer. unreal. found some old canadian silver, eh? good day.

Since your not asking for a time frame, I'll just have to say I filled a Whitman Folder for Lincoln Cents including the 09S VDB and several Mercury dime Folders too. However, that was back when I was a kid. And that was a long time ago. My Dad had a gas station and let me look through all his change every night. If I only knew then what I know now. This was a time when even Sitting Liberty Dimes were in circulation.

The fun thing about our hobby is that except for a handful of manufactured rarities (namely the 1913 V nickel), nearly everything was found in circulation or for a modest issue price. That includes the 1943 copper/1944 steel cents, the unique 1942-S prewar nickel, all of the 1909-S VDB's, and plenty more that escape me at the moment. Part of the appeal of our hobby, I think, is the lotto payoff appeal; about once every decade or two, someone makes a major discovery and turns a small fortune from their pocket change. As for me personally, I managed to score about $5 face in silver coins as a cashier over the course of 4 years, and my roll hunting endeavors turned up some very nice nickels, including the 1950-D.

My best 'circulation' find would be a 1938D Walking Liberty in VF. This was found in a roll of solid silver halves that I purchased from a line teller at my credit union. The roll held a mix of 20 walkers and Franklins, for which I paid $50. This was around 2010.
When I listen to LED ZEPPELIN...so do my neighbors... Roll hunting since '77 Dirt fishing since '72
