Firstly, is there a way ro clean up the damage to the copper itself. Secondly, almost all of the letters are faded, faint, not there. There is nothing wrong with the back. Major overgrasing? Thoughts?

You could soak in pure acetone.

I agree with @CWB that it appears as though this coin make have been struck through a grease-filled die.

Looks like it has been Struck Through Grease (AKA filled die). Nice find.

Not damaged, the strike was prevented by the grease in the devices.

i see this anomaly mostly on recent shield cents, but have seen it elsewhere. this pic is a 2017-P Lincoln Cent, that last S nearly all gone.

No.
There is a weakness in that area because it is the thickest part of the coin. That is where Lincoln's profile is on the other side.

hmm, I guess that explains why I see that issue consistently on only those letters, D STATES OF. thanks.

The same applies to Memorial cents and weakness is often seen in STATES OF and E PLURIBUS UNUM on the reverse, which is opposite Lincoln's shoulder. Also, on Wheat cents, the upper left of the O in ONE will be weak in a similar manner.

@Herbicide74

Nice Greaser! Acetone may help with that coin, but I'm having my doubts. It's worth a shot, though.

It is not worth the effort to fix this coin. Save the BU examples. Those would be more desirable to a collector. On the plated coins, stains don't come off. The plating is stained.
