I'm planning to hunt my Mercs for 42/41 P or D overdates. I'm sure it's a long shot. Has anyone on this forum ever found an overdate in their Mercs? I've already put together a box of 42's.

What started me "re-collecting" in 2013 was inheriting a mason jar of Mercs and Roosies pre-1960. The first thing I did in the Mercs after date separation was scope out the probably 15 of each 42 P & D, w/o success. I have since then only come across a few raws. Don't know if CCF members have found raw, not since I've been around.
You're going after one of the varieties that's been know about for ages, like the 55 & 72 Lincoln DDOs. Can one still be found? Most likely only from a stoopid relative dumping the collection, circulation and those old Grandma's coin jars are about done in by now. Coin jars on shelves today have far surpassed the "unsearched" category. Someone from the 80's or 90's has already checked them out.
Of course, ALWAYS look for them, but as Mark1959 always says, " Don't quit your day job!"

Thank you everyone. I saw the old threads. But, it was my thinking that other members might have recently found overdates. I think the 42/1 D is subtle enough to give hope that there are a some of these gems mixed in silver lots.

There are a lot of those that fool people, that turn out to be MD or something other than a true OD.Talk time to study up the differences before you start searching for them. John1

And here I thought all the 42's were like that.

I'll bet I've looked at 5,000 '42 dimes in my life, and guess what. Good luck though!

Best of luck to you but I would say extremely "doubtful".

I suspect after all these years almost all of them have been found. However, look at how many large and small MM Mercury dimes have been found lately.

I found a 42/41 D couple of years ago in a hundred dollar coin lot, had to look twice and then a third time to really sink into reality that it is what it is. LOL! I am not so sure I'd be that lucky again, but I'm looking for that 1919 DDO that other is lucky enough to find one.

I've now found 3, purchased in lots from ebay and APMEX. Been a while since I posted but Macmerc and others confirmed 2 of them in the forum on high reso' I posted.... Dont rely on collectors at coin shows, there are different overdates, and one is less obvious and cant get talked down when not in a slab :)
