Anyone else upset at the false "Full Split Bands" Mercury dimes listed on ebay that aren't fully split at all? I can't decide if it's the sellers trying to pull a fast one or they are just uneducated on what FSBs really look like? I got tried of writing the sellers to try to help them out to avoid upset buyers... there are just too many, and I think in the end, these sellers just don't care. *** Moved by Staff moved to a more appropriate forum. ***

Most don't know, what I call "the Cherrypicker crowd"...these are the folks that with a cursory reading of CPG are now expert graders just waiting to be hired by NGC. These yahoos just know, and inform us unlearned folk here on CCF daily of how much we DONT know about coins, especially theirs, right out of granddad's jewelry box! Absolutely certain Gramps wouldn't have bought such a fake now, would he?

To be a Fully Split Bands, they need to be distinctly separated, and the tops of the bands need to be like the tops of loaves of bread. That only happens with MS+ coins. That is why "FSB" grades are only listed above MS60 in the catalogs.

I'm sure it's a mix of un-educated sellers listing as such not knowing any better and educated sellers knowing better but looking to prey on trusting buyers. But yeah, it's wide spread along with harshly cleaned examples. Sometimes it gets tiring sifting through all the crap auctions to find the few goods ones. And I even have a list of excluded sellers from my generic saved search...

You would be amazed at how many people just don't know it is referring to the Horizontal bands and not the vertical ones. Many times at coin shows when I ask if that Mercury dime has Full Bands, they show me that the vertical lines are clear. and these are dealers. They really just don't know.

Bands must be fully split and rounded to get the ridiculous premiums quoted.

I ignore descriptions like "full bands" or "steps" or "bell lines" on e-bay. If the seller has great photography you can venture to make your own determination, knowing that a TPG may disagree.

4-5 years ago I probably bought 50% of my coins from ebay. Today I spend 200-300% of what I did 5 years ago, but I can go many months without buying a coin on ebay. Even though I'm using all 100 search emails on ebay. It's interesting to see how often I lose a bid on Heritage, Great Collections, or Stacks to see the exact same coin listed on ebay shortly after at outrageous prices.
