My 1st post. I recently purchased this coin in a large lot. This one intrigued me because of the lustre and fine detail. It wasn't until I had it under magnification, that I realized how mottled the surface was. Most other pennies I have looked at are quite smooth. My question is, could it have been cleaned in an acid bath, and if so, how would they get the lustre back into it. Very little money involved, I just would like your opinions as what could have done this.
Thank You

The lustre is gone for good, as is any value it may have had.

Yes, I would agree that it has been exposed to some sort of acid.
You can tell by the mushy devices and thinner lettering, etc.

Thanks johnnysprawl. I was hoping someone would confirm that. I always knew that cleaning coins was not recommended, but, I had never seen one subjected to an acid etch. I am still amazed at the lustre that is still on it, unless this person had a way to bring it back up, and, if they did I would sure like to know how. Thanks again.

i would try an acetone soak, to me it looks liked the coin may have been lacquered, and that is what is now all bubbly, just a thought, before you discard it to the worthless pile..

Soaked the coin in acetone for 24 hours. No Improvement. I still thank you for the suggestion. It was worth a shot. I'm sure it's still worth it's weight in copper.

The coin is damaged - no amount of acetone will undo that...
