I couldn't resist this one. It's one of my favorite random 1920's mm locations, and offered in the just for kicks category.

Sometimes, mint employees were just a *little* challenged in trying to find the right place for the mm. I could almost hear the instructions for this one: "Just find something, anything, and line up the mint mark under it."

I really hope that employee didn't become an aspiring ship captain, trying to line up on a harbor entrance, or an aspiring pilot, trying to line up on a runway!

In the old days the mint technician would be categorized as a meticulous eccentric craftsman. In 2018 he or she would be ADDHD with obsessive compolsive disorder. I think he or she nailed it right on the money and its perfect.

May have had a little cross wind on that approach. Still landed on the runway pretty straight and under the date. Thanks, Doug.

This one reminds me of a belly-button. Probably the same guy punched this one also?

A long day under one of these and you too will "miss the mark"...

Note the mallet to whack the puncheon, and the tray of working dies at the lower left

At least the mint worker didn't end up whacking the mint mark in the portrait, like the "1 in neck" date punch on the 1897 Indian!

The 1926-D sure is an enigma, though. It's a remarkably boring coin, and I'm not aware of any meaningful varieties for the date except the Cud David Lange noted, but the mint marks sure were all over the cow pasture. The only interesting thing I've found in a 1926-D is a possible very close D/D west, and I wouldn't bet on it, given the amount of wear on the example.
