Which one would you pick between these two coins (above and below) for your collection?

second one, definitely

whats that grey stuff on the bottom of the reverse in the first series of pics?

ms-63 on the first one if those more obvious marks are on the coin, if theyre on the holder higher, maybe 65

im rubbish at deciding ms grades close up though

I'm gonna say MS60 for the first coin. There appear to be multiple marks on the obverse.

I would agree with Shadow, the second coin has a much nicer eye appeal based upon the pictures.

I agree - I'd take the second one over the first any day. I can't tell whether the holder is scratched or not, but I'd go MS60-62 on the first coin.

I have to say the first one seems to be a much stronger strike than the second one. I'd have thought, though, that the spotting and number of hits would have kept it well below MS-66 though.

I'd go for the first one. Its got way more hit marks and a weaker than the second but the second is showing spots that may well as time goes by detract from its overall eye appeal. Besides the first one fits more in line with the few Lincolns I own.

Hey, I'm WAY out of my comfort zone in copper, but that second coin looks more like an RB. Is this one of those examples that has turned in the holder from a light cleaning (q-tip and some type of chemical)? That is the only explanation I can come up with from the little I know about copper, and would help explain the spots above the i, r and t in liberty.

What, Thad, do yo think some of those marks on the first coin might keep it from making that grade. Need a laughing smiley face here, but used the quick reply.

Are you serious Jim? LOL No way I'd assign a 66 to a coin with those black marks. The coin is in a holder, but there's definately a scratch above the date and below Liberty, also a bit of rub on the cheek. On the rev the ONE is nicked up, the UNUM is nicked and there's scratches around the T in CENT. The "marks" near the bottom are just due to a poor planchet mix, those don't really bother me...but the other nicks and marks....MS64 at best IMO.

EDIT: I should add, this is a tough date to find a clean coin. The one I have is the result of a LOT of searching.

Both are nice, but I do like how number two looks in the pic and one seems a little to marked up, cant believe its rated so high. Both way better than mine, you have a nice collection of Lincoln cents. Someday mine will look more like yours.

This is a tough one, each coin has its advantages, but I may have to say the first one. The only reason I am saying this is the detail in the face, the first coin has a lot more detail by far (unless the pictures are deceiving). Yours has a very nice luster, but seems to be very rounded, but I would still grade it at about MS60 (just my opinion).

But I do have to agree that the first coin does not deserve to me a MS-66, overall it should have a lower grade because of the obvious wear on the shoulder and the entire reverse. Either way, I would love either one of these for my collection.
