Is this a common result of circulation damage, as I have not seen it before..?

I wouldn't necessarily call it a natural result of circulation. Someone may have intentionally sanded the plating off of the rim (and a few other places as collateral damage).

I have noticed similar coins when CRHing, some more advanced than that. Not sure exactly what is the cause, is PMD, not a mint error. My theory is either a Dryer Coin not bounced around long or a coin caught in a belted coin counter, eithe rubbing on the belt or caught within the mechanism.

Both very good explanations... I might lean towards a deliberate job only because the rest of the coin seems to be in relatively good shape!

Probably sanded the rim area only that would make gray walls on the coin. PSD Another spendable coin. "Hi ho, hi ho, its back to work we go."

Definitely scuffing of some sort, intentional or otherwise.
