last post for tonight. another 1960 Washington quarter lamination error reverse, and a serious case of die-cracked crudface. obv & rev: a couple looks at the rev lam: and the crudface diecracks.. the crack on the top of the skull runs from front to back: this, I think, may be a well-shattered die. there are numerous smaller die cracks around the face, nose in particular, and up all around LIBERTY, but I suspect that crud is masterfully disguising much of it. there's a nice crack coming out of the eye, off the bridge of the nose, and maybe a bit more. would this be a coin I could soak in something to try to get that crud off or would it be better to not mess with it?

The reverse has a nice lamination flaw!
The obverse only shows damage/scratches to me. I don't see any die cracks, etc.
If you want to soak it, use 100% acetone. It will remove a lot of organic compounds that may be on the coin's surface.

a trip to home depot is in my immediate future. once the crud is cleared up some (if possible) those cracks will be more apparent, unless the crud is really fooling me into thinking what i'm seeing is cracks when it's actually crud, and I don't totally discount that yet. the crud could just be fooling my eye.

Very nice lamination on the reverse. The obverse looks like scratches to me.

okay, so this was a valuable lesson.
soaked the coin in acetone, some of the crud came off, but I managed to scratch the thing twice. not posting pix of that.
from now on, if i'm trying to see through crud, i'll first try water, then acetone. if acetone doesn't do it, depending on the coin, i'll likely just stash it away again. there are a few other tools I need to get in the future for a task like this.
there are some smaller die cracks, but not as many as I was thinking. that was the crud fooling my eye.

Make sure the coin is totally dry before you put it away. Let it set out and dry naturally rotating the sides. Hold the coin by the rims only. Remove any fresh finger prints now. The salt and contaminates from your hand can leave marks of the surface of your coin as it enjoys it rest in a container. (un dried water on cents will turn green)

thanks, coop, that's excellent advice. I try to refrain from getting my fingers on coin surfaces. usually put a little scrap of clean dry cloth on fingertips if I need to hold it, or hold it by the rim. I found out about fingerprints a while ago, lol. regardless, yeah, nice lam on reverse, highlight of the coin, aside from it being silver. after I rest my back a while i'll be posting some pix of what I suspect may be Machine Doubling on four 1964 quarters. i'm not adept at distinguishing between the differences, have only read about them. I saw a great graphic somewhere about the differences in the looks, the ridges & shelf-like appearances, etc., but i've never found a true double die, the collectible kind, so this too is all new to me. also found another quarter with some great die cracks on the reverse that give the eagle that 'spitting eagle'-look. coming up in a while. so glad I joined this forum. since joining i've found some great little keepers in my stash I never knew I had. I look forward to sharing all my finds with all of you.
