The link below is for an auction seemingly using PCGS Trueview style pictures. However, notice that there is no certification number in the center. Look also at the sellers other listings. Some show cert numbers while others don't. The auction I looked at had all "private listing" for the bidders.

Is this some type of scam? Or maybe it is legitimate and I am missing something. Anyway, I thought this might call for a warning.

I think the TrueView pics are of another coin of the same type (edited to remove Cert) and they're using that for marketing.

Their coin is obviously raw and comes with poor pics. Pure attempted deception.

Difficult to say what is going on here.

If you compare the locations of the obverse and reverse rim bumps (obverse at 12:30 and reverse at 11:30) they are in the same locations on the TrueView photos as the 'raw' coin photos shown on the yellow paper background.

Surface color is obviously different between the two sets of images.

Perhaps the seller took raw coin images before submitting the coin for certification ... I do that all the time. No clue why they were then used in the listing if the coin is indeed certified now.

The lack of certification number in the TrueView images and ebay listing leads me to the conclusion that the seller does not want to advertise this is a Details graded coin ... which it likely would be with the rim issues ... and IMHO omitting that information is indeed misleading at best.

Anyone interested in this coin should message the seller and seek clarification on those points.

Take a look at my other hobby ... http://www.jk-dk.art
Rest in Peace

Agree, it is likely a details coin.

It looks like all the Bust halves he's selling using the TrueView photos without the cert number are obviously details coins. Perhaps he acquired them as graded details coins, then broke them out and is selling them as raw coins. Probably using the PCGS photos because they're a lot better than his.

Good theory.

This seller has sold many high value coins in the last few months and maintains a 100% feedback score. It does seem that the coins he is sending out are indeed the coins pictured. as always- this could be an elaborate scam, but I would assume it is not.

I agree with the crack out theory. We've seen these crack out experts before. Not too smart using the trueview images.....should have cropped out the coin completely if they want to play that game.
Rest in Peace

This sold listing is really odd, true view images with the Draped Bust straight graded VF35 in an ANACS holder. I'm guessing PCGS gave it a details grade (at least once).https://www.ebay.com/itm/RARE-1803-...047675.l2557

Using PCGS images for coins no longer in PCGS slabs is one of the weirdest strategies I think I've seen to date
