Looks like it's this type. Holstein-Gottorp, Johann Adolf, sechsling (1/64 thaler) dated 1596.

Saurma 3552, apparently.

January1may - you nailed it. I spent a lot of time trying to get this one, and I was in Holstein-Gottorp , but I couldn't pin down exactly.

The Saurma type index is often helpful in attributing 15th and 16th century coins.
It is particularly useful, of course, when there's an exact type match (as happened in this case), but even when there isn't an exact match, it often provides good hints on where to look later.

(Fun story: I guessed that the 64 was the denomination... then looked up the wrong 64 in the index, mistook the two lions for a griffin, and proceeded to spend a good 20 minutes down the wrong path by looking up a lot of Pomeranian coins that of course didn't match this at all.
When I finally figured out what went wrong and looked up the right 64, this type was the only entry.)

Funny. I had the lions and the date, but not the denomination. I was searching on numista and I found similar coins, but not that one.

It doesn't appear to be on Numista (or, at least, I didn't find it there when I looked).

If a coin looks like the right region and time period for it, I tend to check Saurma first, and only then Numista (for cross-checking more than anything else). Numista's coverage of the 16th and especially 15th century... let's say "sucks" and leave it at that.
(Mind you, Saurma has its own gaps, while Numista is at least slowly but surely getting better.)
