I just got on this site and posted one topic. I am new to collecting and inherited a few coins. I sent 7-I think nice coins- to ANACS. Who do you guys prefer for grading? What is a CAC coin? Thanks for the help.

I prefer ANACS because I don't have an unlimited coin collecting budget. I just get my better stuff authenticated so my heirs don't get blindsided (taken advantage of) when I pass on and they start selling this stuff. Most people prefer PCGS and NGC. To each his own and you get what you pay for. Enjoy what you collect and collect what you enjoy! I've seen people sell stuff to local dealers that were slabbed by all three and the dealer said "well, I think ______ (insert PCGS, NGC OR ANACS) made a mistake and I don't agree with their grade!" At least when it's slabbed they can't holler counterfeit!

CAC is the Certified Acceptance Corporation. It is basically grading the TPG. If a graded coin is strong for the grade (not overgraded or barely making grade) it will be certified with a little green holographic CAC sticker, sometimes called a "green bean".

I didn't know that about CAC. So people send a certified coin to CAC and I guess that makes it more valuable when they put their stamp on it?

@BP, very good questions. As it turns out, we have a whole section of CCF devoted to third party graders: http://goccf.com/f/84I suggest looking at the last several dozen topics for loads of useful information about the pros and cons of the various TPGs as well as seeking a green bean for your slabs.

Each collector needs to decide what a coin needs to be worth before submitting to a TPG. I send all mine to NGC if the real retail value is $200 or more.

Hi, BassPro. I think you made the right choice, so far. Anacs was the first TPG, I believe, and I do respect their grades. Best part is their fees are reasonable.
