This one's not quite the coin that the 77 is, but far fewer minted. only 847,000 minted. The 1877....over 7 million.

Pretty crappy reverse strike....but sure looks like an uncirculated coin from where I sit.

Pancake strike for sure, with numerous obverse marks. I lean toward AU-58, very minimal circulation.

Its not quite as ratty as it appears in the pics, though it does have some contact marks that the 77 does not have....but I paid about 1/3 what I paid for the 1877. I got the 1862 for my 7070 so I didn't have to subject the 1877 to the possibility of damage from the acetate slide. I missed the 1854 for 50 bucks...dangit anyhow.

au details cleaned. coin has no luster and clear indications of cleaning.

great price for $15. The 1877 for $20 was a great deal too.

That was the price God knows when ...

I disagree as to the coin being cleaned, but you're entitled to your opinion, and I did solicit your opinion.

Chance, below are pictures of an AU58 Seated dime. Note the luster on the coin. This coin is not uncirculated, although close. Compare these surfaces to the one on the subject coin and see why I believe the coin is cleaned.

jjk, it is certainly a beautiful coin and the surfaces are indicative of a very high grade coin, but this is the PCGS Photograde plate coin for an AU58 graded Seated dime. There is a little rub on the obverse high points at the breasts, hair, right arm and leg. I tdoesn't take a lot.

Whether its a business strike or Proof isn't really an issue, but this coin has mirrored fields.... it never had frosty luster, so its no wonder you can see no evidence of "mint luster'. Under a loupe, the legends and devices exhibit some "frost" if you will, but it's pretty much hidden by toning. The toning is somewhat splotchy, which makes it even more difficult to "read" from photos.

Chance, the rims of the subject coin do not indicate a proof strike, and neither does the striking weakness in the wreath on the reverse of the coin. This is clearly a business strike, and one chemically stripped of its luster and original surfaces.

The coin has ORIGINAL proof-like surfaces. That does NOT mean its a proof strike. Its not at all unusual for that time period for the mint to produce business strikes on retired proof dies. That's why my 1880 Shield nickel, despite having mirrored fields, could still be a business strike. DMPL Morgans come to mind ... they have mirrired fields...and are NOT proofs.
