Good Afternoon Everyone,
I just joined today, so bear with me if I end up asking a lot of dumb questions. Fist off, I inherited a lot of coins from my parents and grandparents estates. They have all past on. I have been putting this task off for quite a while now, but since I am semi-retired now, I figure this is a good way to spend part of my day.
So first off, all of the coins I have are very dirty, greasy, and generally leave my hands black and sticky after handling them. I have found lots of different opinions about how to correct this. Clean/Don't Clean/Leave Alone. There are way to many to clean individually by hand. One thought I had was to place them in some soapy water just to get the grease and sticky stuff off of them. I would like to do something before I get serious about sorting and cataloging what I have.
So that is my first question to this community.
Thanks, and I look forward to finding out if I have anything of value or just a bunch of coins!

A pure acetone bath will remove most of the biological contaminants which will probably include sticky stuff.

Air dry. Use a hair blower for faster drying.

If you have questions, always include photos.

We look forward to your participation.

Welcome Trix18!

In addition to the Forum Rules, there are the Unwritten Rules.

If you have reviewed the Forum Rules, and read the Tutorials then the Unwritten Rules go into effect. Here is the first one:

Unwritten Rule #1: There are no stupid questions.

--

There are some really smart coin collectors on this forum who know a ton about removing surface debris from coins. Before I tried any of the various methods, I would first search the Main Coin Forum for "cleaning", "acetone", and similar. (You can also search the entire forum, although discussions about 'cleaning' coins are supposed to be posted in the Main Coin Forum.) You'll find some very helpful threads, such as:

Cleaning coins with acetone.

Cleaning Pennies Specifically

BadThad's Polarity Ladder

Specific questions re: Polarity Ladder - Step 3: Xylene

All the best,

Mark
Rest in Peace

Trix18,I am sorry for the loss of your parents and grandparents. I can understand why you have put this off. After you have done an acetone bath, rinsed, and dried the coins think of protecting them in a 2X2 or plastic holder.

I look forward to your questions, I can always learn something.
