I have a 1972 dollar coin in plastic. Is there a way to tell if this was a proof or an aftermarket case?

It is a D mint coin. All are Business strikes. Proof coins have S (San Fransisco). Yours may be a Mint state MS60+ grade from a mint sealed pack or just out of normal transport medium.

. That holder was not a mint issued protection. Although it will continue to protect it if you leave it as is.

I do plan on leaving it as is. 1972 is my birth year. I was given this coin many years ago as a gift. Thanks for the replies.

Proof is not a grade but a type of coin. Proof coins are made with different dies than business strikes. Coins are graded on the Sheldon scale of 1 - 70 with mint state being MS-60 to MS-70. Proof coins are graded on a scale of PR-60 to PR-70.
Proof coins are not released for general circulation, but sold by the mint to collectors.

The case is manufactured by Air-Tite or Kointains or somebody like that. Definitely after minting and a wonderful way to protect the coin.

Proof coins have also been placed in circulation and received wear...

They are called impaired proofs. Still proof as that is how they were minted but lower grades, e.g. PF50 (would be AU50 if it were a circulation or business strike).
