Well that explains it. I have two "high" 9s. Now what should I call them? Just 1929? Rp9? Hand punched 9? Yes shaky ground.

call them "1929 High 9". That's it. They're here to stay, PCGS wont' reverse their decision and the market loves the High 9s!

Quote: the market loves the High 9s! Well, the dealers and sellers love the designation "high 9", but you, personally, won't when you spend $1000 for an high grade example and then learn 2 years down the road that it's worth $50.

Okie,
While I do think we can debate the cause and sub-types of the variety, having spent a lot of time looking for these I can say that they are all very scarce. Others who have tried to find them have had the same result. I am with Canadianvarieties on this one....it is now a pretty widely accepted variety.
I can say that the example from this last auction now sits in my drawer. It is lovely and I am delighted. Much brighter than the photos suggested. It may make PCGS 65 Red. I will send it down there sooner or later, but I just mailed a batch last week so it will be a while before it goes.

Well, I was just giving my opinion, which is the definition of chat sites. People can make up their own minds and have their own desires concerning what they want to collect. I, personally, am somewhat of a purist when I think about the definition of a true variety. Good luck on your collecting endeavors.

All a good fun debate and I have long ago stopped taking anything in life personally. I would say though by calling yourself a "purist" and speaking of "true varieties" you are making a bit of a nasty backhanded slam. And the "good luck" does seem a wee bit condescending. All forgiven though!

Smallcentguy, does that mean that you will be releasing the Heritage Auction 1929 High 9 PCGS MS65 BN back into the wild?

Sorry for misunderstanding Okie.....email/texting can often be misconstrued.
Cdn Varieties....I have no plans to sell any right now. Maybe once I know what grade this one makes. Realistically that would be in the summer. My gut though is that I will be selling my third one first....its MS64RB.

So you have a MS64RB, MS65BN and now a MS64/MS65RD/RB... maybe if I hang onto my MS63 we can monopolize the market

Mine should come back from PCGS MS-64 Red... (was in a ICCS MS-65 Red holder)

The thought of trying to monopolize these in high grade has crossed my mind. But.....not for me. Here are better photos of the new toy. The obverse is full red. the darkness is just a shadow.

Terrific coin. I wonder though, if this many high mint state examples exist, how scarce can they really be? With an overall 1929 mintage of over 12 million, I would be skeptical that demand will rise to the point that supply will ever be truly tight. But then, I guess time has shown the 1926 far 6 five cents apparently came from a lightly used die, so who knows. I have never studied either series, but it would worry me a little, if I were thinking of collecting these.
Again, great coin. I particularly like the strong strike.
