Reverse is VLDS w/MD DDD on UNITED especially and by the massive hairlines on the obverse has been buffed with a rotary buffer and possibly with some form of polishing compound. Try a bath in acetone to see if it dulls some, may just be a coating of waxy residue. It isn't a proof and the details on the hair are clearly unplated. Been "whizzed" in other words. Some little garage imp is trying to pull a fast one...

Here's a pic Coop posted, but I'm still not sure. If it's not a proof, it's not the coin I'm looking for.

Hey jim, I dont see any signs of plating either but definitely see heavy hairlines. Maybe its me but I dont like that proof bus strike example above, the rims look opposite of what they are labelled to me anyway. I need to look on my ipad see if that makes a difference

Thanks Crazyb0 and Mark, I agree it's been brushed/scraped. Hopefully it wasn't to hide signs of plating. Thanks Slamn, then there's still hope. I agree it's not Coop's best E-file, (or maybe it's both of us). HAha. The known example sold for around $8000, I think. It was in Coin World. While I have been on wild goose chases before, this time I won't get my hopes up too high. Last time I was thinking about paying off my mortgage. Not this time though, I am only thinking of paying off my truck.

The coin looks like it was plated. There are no Denver proofs that year. Just clad coins. To make sure you could put a mark on the reed area to view the copper that is under the plating.

Thanks Coop, I knew you'd have a solution. I'll do that and get back. There was one authenticated by PCGS. There was an article about it in Coin World. Evidently at least one silver planchet was accidentally held over. The weight is so close to the clad's they tested it with the gravity test. I think you're right about this one. I think they scratched it up trying to disguise the plating. I'll do the edge and get back. BTW, is my coin a proof?

Quote: There is one 1971-D Proof dollar known to exist that is silver. Never heard of that. Sure you aren't confusing it with the 40% silver 74-D or 77-D coins? Those do exist.

Sorry about that, I was confusing it with the 1971-D Half dollar. Thanks all.
