This lady is in the collection from my late father.
It appears to be in great shape except for some scratches above her head on the obverse and the eagles head on the reverse. Are these scratches from handling damage from a or with the die while at the Mint?
The images of the obverse and reverse appear to be rotated several degrees from each other. How often would this occur in minting before the Civil war?

Does Overton's book cover this particular coin?
All thoughts and replies are appreciated. Thanks

The scratches look to be PSD. Die rotation is not that uncommon back then.

That's called graffiti. Someone intentionally scratched up the coin.

How much will graffiti devalue the coin? I know its hard to say and then if the demand for a coin is there, then there may be minimal devaluing?
Is there a reason behind graffiti such as this on this old of a coin?
Thanks

Graffiti hurts the value .. a lot

Many collectors would not consider buying a coin with graffiti, even
at a cheap price.

Value by graffiti damage I would say at minimum it loses 40% or more of its value
Rest in Peace

No one can tell exactly why.

Unless we're looking at a 1933 Double Eagle, the value is likely to go down about 50 - 60% of its original value. Some people, including me, will not collect coins that have graffiti.

VF-Details, graffiti. Since the damage is in very prominent places on both the obverse and reverse, the value is significantly impacted and only would appeal to low budget collectors who only want a cheap type coin. For example if the coin was worth $100 undamaged, it may only be worth $40 damaged to the "right" customer.

Yes, there is significant value reductions to any graffiti on coins but it is a family heirloom.
I would enjoy it as such!
