You guys are relentless. Before I disclose what I paid for her, let me give you the reasons I was willing to step up for this piece. Naturally toned Peace dollars with this type of color are exceedingly rare. To find one with true textile is even rarer, this is only the fourth Peace dollar I have ever seen with it. It is in the right plastic, and perhaps even more importantly, John Albanese approved it and gave it the cac sticker. There are no questions as to its legitimacy, it's the real deal. Finally, the grade on the holder in this case was actually a blessing for me. A higher ms, which is usually what I prefer, would have priced it way out of my reach....yet it has the look of an ms coin. With the buyers premium included, I paid $1650 for this coin, and was willing to go higher. Did I overpay? When you consider I may never be presented with the opportunity again to acquire one, if there is one, then there are absolutely no regrets on my end. I will post better pictures when I get her in hand. My previous experiences with Legend have always been positive, and the coins have always looked better than the images provided.

@hadleydog Thanks for the update. I personally thought you may have paid in the $2,000 - $2,500 range as I have NEVER seen a Peace dollar with these types of colors. I have seen a few toned examples (for big $'s) that don't even come close to the colors on yours. I am looking forward to you getting it in your hands...and more pics! Super congrats again! I don't think you over paid.

Ditto here. I was expecting the figure to be much higher. You did very well! Question: What causes the textile toning and why is it called textile toning? I posted a morgan awhile ago that sold for an insane amount of money. http://goccf.com/t/299842Fellow members described it as textile toning as well. You certainly don't see it very often on any coin types. Just curious about what causes it and the how terminology came to be. Just from the sound and look of it, I would assume it is caused by longterm contact with a sweater or other type of fabric.

Another drop-dead toner, hadleydog. Holy crap, really amazing! I've never seen anything close to this. It's 100% toned. Your price was great, too. You could flip this for twice that amount.

Thank you again for all the comments. Quote: Question: What causes the textile toning and why is it called textile toning? I posted a morgan awhile ago that sold for an insane amount of money. Mike, textile toning occurs when a coin has sat completely undisturbed and pressed against the mint bag for a very long period of time. Some of these coins will pick up the weave pattern of the cloth. You can even see the correct color progression within the textile pattern, the color of the 'spots' lagging behind the surrounding tone (orange spots on a pink background, pink on green). I find that kinda cool

Don't you think that this coin deserves a "plus" grade? I wonder why not.

If PCGS had a STAR designation like NGC, you can bet this one would have it, and it would probably be a rainbow colored star at that. Hadley, I can't imagine you'll ever find a more monster Peace dollar than this. This is the 1881-S "moose" Morgan of the Peace dollar series.

That's a pretty cool coin! I personally think it's worth paying extra for stuff like that.

Well finally got the coin in hand, and I couldn't be happier. The auction pictures portrayed much darker toning near the rims, and did not show the blazing luster that really allows the colors to pop. Sorry for the poor pics (the best I could do with my cellphone), but they at least portray the coin closer to it's in hand look. I'm questioning whether the textile is simply elevation chromatics around the relief of the feathers, although it appears to extend into the fields which would confirm that it is true textile. I'll get a better look in the morning.
