Looks like a die chip on the back of the 'E' on LIBERTY.

A die chip wouldn't have been my first guess either. I understand why you asked.

A "BIE" is a die chip, right? Just curious.

It does seem to be an early-stage BIE--interesting.

Cuds On Coins states it as a Lincoln Cent Die Break "BIE"
http://cuds-on-coins.com/Lincoln-cent-bies/

And this link shows over 100 with some barley noticable and a few that look a lot like yours.

Really? I thought is was so irrelevant that it was just a "fun to find" cent!

Like I said, there are a bunch of them that look like yours. I couldn't pin point which one without the coin in my hand. It's difficult on an IPad 2 to go from one page to another because it doesn't keep its place when you bring the window back up. Of course if you don't find a match, email it to JC. You may get it attributed if it's not listed.
