Hi all , I was hoping to get some feedback on this very old medal ,i would assume it dates to the period from the wear on the coin especially noticeable on the eagle wings. I read there was new die made and this coin has the flat top a and the periods close to the a and d. But whats odd is the size of my coin is 1" 3/8 and is 1/8" thick . I dont have a fifty cent piece but its about that size but heavier .At like 22grams. This purchase was from a collector of indian artifacts and I really believe this to be a worn item from a tribal leader from central mn. Thanks for looking and any comments appreciated ..

Whatever you do, don't remove the medal from the hash. Any idea where in Minnesota?

Unfortunately, I do not own any reference books on Indian Peace Medals as a topic unto themselves. I know there are works these pieces are discussed.

What does the "loop" look like? And what does the edge at the 6 o'clock position look like?

The reason I ask is I found a larger size in the Smithsonian holdings https://www.si.edu/object/NMAI_257630

yeah the loop if you mean the clasp thing is just brass I think and its just round and compressed together . and the edge it flat and smooth , I used a caliper and its 2.83 mm thick and the coin is 33.67 wide.

Thanks all! I really do like the coin. and I think the wear on the coin makes it look quite loved by the owners .does anyone think it worth getting it graded or just hang on to it the way it is ?

An Indian wearing his Thomas Jefferson Indian Peace Medal:

Of course he is not a real Indian, but an actor in the 1950 film "Winchester 73".

I know I'm late to the game on this one, but....

This is not an original peace medal and it was never awarded to any tribal leader or other Native American for that matter. The biggest indicator is the size. The US Mint did not issue presidential or peace medals in this size until the 1970s under the direction of Director Mary Brooks. These miniatures are still being struck, sporadically, by the Mint today.

In fact, this specific medal was most likely struck in the 1990's or later, based on the style of the obverse lettering. It was likely artificially aged or antiqued in order to pass on as a souvenir.

I'm sorry that I don't have better news. I wish this was an original too!
