These days, I'd think anything so expensive needs to be certified (unless you're just buying gold bullion coins from a place like APMEX).

That being said, the one I have is not certified, since I got it so long ago (1980?), before certification was common.

Although I am not a fan of slabs,
Probably best to buy slabbed in the American market.

For the value, I would buy slabbed/authenticated. That's the only Newfoundland type I don't have, and for obvious reasons. Why couldn't they have made a crown-sized silver dollar?

I would definitely buy a graded coin. There are counterfeits out there, but they don`t have the gold look about them so much. In hand, you would spot the fake right away.
There`s no Newfoundland gold being sold on ebay that's in bad shape. Most everything is VF+ since I assume the melt value exceeds the market value of a $2 gold coin in poor grade. What ever you buy, you will pay for. If you see a cheap gold coin on ebay it is def a fake. Just be sure to buy from a reputable seller.

I picked up a nice one from east coast coins and collectibles on ebay several years ago. About an EF but I got it for basically melt at auction as it had an attached ring to hang on a necklace. I think I saw they'd just listed a couple more (without the ring!) earlier this week at auction.

p.s. for any seller who wasn't one of the big and reputable ones I would stick with the above advice to get a TPG'd one.

Are these known to be the victims of Chinese counterfeiting?

Yes they are.
Here is an example from the Canadian Counterfeit Forum
that I borrowed the picture from. If you are going to buy
one raw, make sure you get it from a reliable dealer.
