Fine and dandy for small purchases but anything over $100 is not worth the risk of getting mugged or worse

I just bought about $60 worth of silver on Craigslist. I had it shipped to a work address for the reasons GO brings up. The scary part is that it is a local deal. And the parnoid coin addict in me thinks about not wanting a local stranger to know where I live.
It is hard to find a deal most of the time though. Often people selling morgans for $30 and AE for $40.

Never used it for coins (and I don't ever plan to), but I've bought and sold a number of other things. Every transaction went smoothly so far.

There's nothing different about Craigslist versus the "items for sale/wanted" ads in the local paper that we have been using all our lives. If you don't feel comfortable about going to a stranger's home with a loaded wallet, you should meet at a public place where there would tend to be cameras and people around. Much of it is common sense but sometimes you have no choice. If I were the seller of a car or furniture, I will invite strangers to my address. If I were the buyer of a car or furniture, I will go to a stranger's home with a loaded wallet if "everything around me looks cool". If I was selling or buying jewelry or coins, the meeting would take place elsewhere.

I've bought a few coins off of craigslist. I usually insist that the meeting happens in the township library.

I have 6 or 7 times to purchase coins. I always set up the meeting place that is somewhere public for my protection and theirs (and make sure that they know it's also for their protection so that they feel comfortable). One guy I dealt with asked me to meet him at his house, and I said no due to the fact that he was neither someone I knew nor someone referred to me by a good friend. He was cool with it and understood why I wanted to meet elsewhere. Every transaction I have done has been great and I have met some nice people this way. Just like someone else said, it's no different than using your local newspaper ad to conduct a transaction. You just have to be smart about things and always, always be aware of your surrondings.

Oh and most importantly, I do transactions in cash (I do not pay by check so that my address remains hidden). I also rarely give out my cell phone unless I feel it's necessary to finalize the transactions. Third, my hotmail email account is set up with a fake name so that when it appears in their inbox, it does not have my real name tied to it. Just a few more precautions I take...

One thing to keep in mind is that alot of people still do not know about Craigslist. I only found out about it because one of my co-workers sent me an ad that was for someone selling ice cube trays that go in your freezer. She found it amusing so she sent me the link. Anyway, the nice thing about it is that you can keep posting over and over at no charge. |

That's why I always meet in public places (once met in a parking lot of a huge and busy home and garden store, where the meeting spot fronted along a very busy road). Other meeting places I have done include busy restaurants by busy roads or meeting during a busy time of the day in a restaurant parking lot (busy times like lunch hour or dinner time). But always, always be aware of your surroundings. |

I love CL, I use it for gardening things as well as collectables. I grew up around NYC in the early 80's so I don't fear too many things- but use your street smarts and you'll be fine.
I buy and sell silver rounds all the time on it, mostly under $500.
When I moved to Humboldt County there was no CL- and I would email for one all the time, one day it became reality- and now it's quite popular around here.

I have signed up and used it so far with no success My first add got hundreds of scam replies my latest offering is sitting unanswered. But its free and it may one day work. I to would only consider an exchange in a public place.

Unlike Mikey in the old Life cereal commercial who tried it and liked it - I tried and I don't like it. (Craigs list that is) I do in fact Love Life Cereal!
