Interesting....acetone wouldn't hurt but I have zero clue how to open the early prestige sets. It's a $250-300 set so I can understand your concern
It doesn't look like toning but more like schmutz (clinical term)....acetone won't remove toning but it might remove schmutz with the help of a gentle Q-tip

Oh crap. That's a huge bummer. Pretty sure they are glued together. Looked on YouTube too.

I tend to think this schmutz would come off. It wouldn't hunt to try, very slow and a very little bit at a time. I wouldn't even use a Q-tip at first. I think I would dull/soften the end of a toothpick with acetone and very lightly touch one spot of the schmutz and see what happens. But I have to get to it first.

I haven't seen anything on how to break/crack one open and put it back together. I even search this forum on how to open Prestige sets, no joy unless I'm missing it.

Proof fields are extremely delicate and will show any attempt at mechanical (Q-tip) cleaning.

Quote: Pretty sure they are glued together. Nope. The Prestige sets come apart and go back together really easy. Nothing is glued or sealed. The outer frame opens from the back and you can pull out then lens which is just snapped closed. That being said, acetone is as far as I would go on this. No cotton swabbing.

Good to know they just pull apart. Good luck with the acetone. Should have never become an issue though. Post pics. I'm really interested how things turn out. Hope I never need to know that they come apart.

Perfect jbuck, Thanks! Between you guys and me, I'm scared to mess/damper with this stuff. Always afraid I'll make it worse! I should make a video of this. Like buck said, it just snapped apart. Now for the real hard part. I'll show/let you know the results.

Dipping or MS 70 most likely to get it off. Looks like its just toning, which also means that if you put the coin back in it's just going to come back as long as you're storing them in that case. The case itself is the problem not the coin

Acetone will do no harm to the coin. MS70 will remove a minute portion of the surface so that would be a definite last resort....and the coin has to SOAK in the acetone for a while...not a dab kinda thing AND be rinsed off with distilled water.
The problem is the schmutz and the gentle Q-tip would be used only ON that. Can't be worse than what is already there...no Q-tip on the rest of the coin.
Done it many times...never had any issues BUT I will add the acetone doesn't work all the time.
I should add MS70 does a great job of removing haze off proofs...not sure about schmutz. Various opinions on the actual action of the cleaner...

Glad you were able to get it open. And the photos are good enough to show everyone what I said. Just be careful with the next steps!

Well, a little bit better not much. I think that damaged/toning area is etched into the surface of the coin. I stood the coin on it's edge in a small plastic receptacle. I let the edge/just afflicted area soak in acetone for several hours. Then I gently used the soften side of a toothpick on the affected area. The good part is, I didn't make it worse and the set went back together very easily. Before: After:
