Weird Looking 1879-O Morgan Dollar That I Bought As Genuine

Need some help. !879-O Morgan weighs 26.61g, passes the magnetic test, the ting (sound) tests sounds right but gives a very steel-like appearance. Plus the edges have a wafered appearance all the way around.

The rim looks odd, so does outline around the eagle.

Not an expert but looks ok to me. The coin would weigh considerably less if it was steel. Au55 but looks like it was cleaned given the halos around all the reverse devices. Obverse is attractive.

I concur that it has the dull, lifeless look of a cleaned coin that has just begun to retone.

That "wafered" edge is odd, though. One explanation may be that it was once mounted in a finding. A more suspicious type might theorize that it's a modern forgery on a sandwich planchet with a tungsten core (to get the weight up).

But assuming it's genuine, even if the surfaces weren't impaired, I doubt this'd climb out of the XF range. This is the kind of Morgan that you should almost always give a pass on.
