This copper seems to have some uniform corrosion. Should I attempt to clean it? If yes, what else to use besides olive oil? Would like to treat the corrosion so it won't become worse.

I think it could be an EF+ with a better than normal strike in the middle.

Thank you!

I say no. It doesn't look like bronze disease to me, so I personally would just leave it alone. I'm sure we will have some additional opinions as folks wake up and weigh in on this question.

Absolutely NO. DON'T clean this coin. The corrosion that you see cannot be reversed as it has pitted the surface. Any attempt to clean this will show that scarring.

DON'T CLEAN IT. It will practically destroy the surfaces. Just leave it as it is.

Thank you for the warm welcome...the quick replies and advice! Any benefit to have NCS look at it? I am pretty sure that it would grade as "details/corrosion" with NGC, and maybe NCS may have a solution as a last resort.

What grade would you assign to it IF NOT FOR THE CORROSION? What grade do you estimate WITH THE CORROSION?

Thank you!

XF-45 if not for the corrosion. NCS may help. I would not try and clean this. Verdicare, I believe, would not hurt this coin.

JPL Coin Care. See me at the upcoming Whitman Baltimore Coin Show during March 2018. I can turn this coin into a $1,000 coin.

I kinda like you coin covered with verdigris, atleast its even. I had a similiar problem with one of mine. I bought it really cheap because of the verdigris. Its a shame because it had really nice surfaces were it was absent. It was pretty ugly with the green fuzzy mold look so I gave it a shot with verdicare which helped but didnt please me. I used a copper coin figuring copper on copper couldnt be too bad to rub down the corrosion since most coins wear from coin to coin comtact, it seems pleasing to me now and seems to be aging better and better. I was trying to conserve it rather than clean it. The differnce is color is slighter than it shows and should darken over time. I'm pleased with it tho so thats all that matters.

Anybody still got any of that Blue Ribbon freon business? Is it like $200/oz. now? I guess Coin Care is the modern-day alternative... Don't try anything too harsh - as was noted, there's no active disease apparent. While it does seem like maybe it "could" be helped, don't go effing up what is not a horrid look as-is.

Never mind, then, not necessary! Just scrape the scuzz away with a wheatie!! Finish off with some Brasso for that nice shine.

Steviegets, that coin has some nice very sharp details. It will take quite a while for it to "retone", maybe a decade or more unless you accelerate it. I do not think I want go that route though.

Looked up VerdiCare. Seems to stabilize the surfaces well and gets rid of the green. At least that's what it claims to do. Here are some photos that one seller claims are "before" and "after" it was applied.

JPL...what was the feedback you got on your chemical solution? How is it different from VerdiCare?

Ahhhh ... yes ... Blue Ribbon. I will have a bottle of my formulation with me at Whitman in March 2018 on Friday and Saturday. Ask around ... for JPL.

Will do demos. Long story on its formulation ... $400/oz.. LOL.

Remember my profession was Safety, Environmental and CHEMISTRY! <VVVBG>.

No on carbon spots but safe on red copper and no harm or effect on the cartwheel effect for MS coins - of course. Any alloy.

See you at Whitman.

I designed this formulation strictly for copper alloy coins.

"no harm or effect on the cartwheel effect for MS coins"

I am not familair with anything out there that doesn't damage the cartwheel effect. Do you happen to have any before and after photos?
