This Gratian Siliqua has met the farmers plough from up-close.. Very sad though, because it looks like it was in a very good state.

Ancient coins in good quality silver can suffer from silver crystallization, and thus become very brittle.

From the nature of the breakage line, this seems to be what happened here.

Medieval bracteates suffer from the same problem.

This one is still very solid. Even gives the "silver sound" when ticking it with my nail

Even in this state, if the coin is attributable, then it's a better piece of history to hold. It's still sad b/c this one would have been one of the better examples.
