I believe this is another counterfeit $3 gold coin. I don't know this for a fact, but since I have been duped before, there are a lot of things about this one that cause me to question it. Opinions? http://cgi.ebay.com/1857-3-00-US-GO...IN_W0QQitemZ170221945691QQihZ007QQcategoryZ39468QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Shipping costs: US $28.49 UPS 2nd Day AirŪ I'd hold off and deal with an actual coin seller and not someone that specializes in selling AC Compressors

Sometimes they turn out to be the best deals! I got a few when the seller did not know what they had and was just trying to liquidate.

Well the price is about right. Book value for VF is $850 and this one sold for the same price http://cgi.ebay.com/THREE-DOLLAR-GO...-K_W0QQitemZ140232741762QQihZ004QQcategoryZ39468QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem True it can be a nice steal to buy from a non-collector but I don't single coins anymore since I got a coin stuck to a piece of paper with packaging tape to hold it in place

Even if it's real, I find it very hard to determine surface condition from that photo. This is the sort of coin you buy from a trusted dealer--in person (imo)

this is why I think it is fake: -very unusual grain kernal pattern on the back. and some raised lumps around that area -irregular denticals that don't all seem to connect to the rim on both obverse and reverse -interesting raised line in Liberty's crown. I can't really tell much else from the surface of the coin from these pics. I've been studying these coins intently after realizing that mine was a fake, and I've seen a lot of real ones, even on ebay. But this one sends some strong warning signs. This is one coin type that you never want to buy raw.

One tip on ebay coinage anything over say $50.00 and gold&silver or even a cent I would make sure it graded by a TPG like NGC PCGS or ANACS.

If it's a fake it's a pretty good one. As far as I can tell it closely matches an NGC-slabbed example on Heritage. The Heritage coin does not however have that raised line that I see below the third "puff" in Liberty's headdress. I'm thinking that could be a die crack.
I'd grade it maybe VF-35 and as such it could be a decent buy at $828 or so with shipping. The seller does offer a 3-day return if item is not as described. I would only bite if I first got a commitment from the seller that they would extend the return privilege until I could have it authenticated.

I would trust the person with only one coin for sale, more than I would trust the person with multiple coins that look fake. I would just think this is someone selling their inheritance. I wouldn't buy anything of that value on ebay though, I would go to a coins shop. TPG slabs aren't a guarantee anymore either, they can be fake also.

Look carefully at the central area on the reverse in between the kernals on top. Do you see those raised bumps on the area outside of the kernals? Are those on the NGC slabbed coin? I may be wrong, but I don't think those should be there. My counterfeit has the same raised bumps, and multiple dealers claimed that as a sign of a counterfeit. I haven't seen those markings on a genuine $3 gold, but I may be wrong. Please enlighten me with a picture if you can. :-)
thanks

I'll just say two things. When ANACS started up they reported that over 2/3rd of all of the 3 dollar gold pieces submitted were fake. Second during the 1979/80 gold and silver hysteria Silvertowne bought thousands of those Liberty/Saint-Gaudens/indian gold type sets, and almost without exception the type II dollars and three dollar gold pieces in them were fake. I may hate the grading services but even I will say that unless you REALLY know what you are doing, the three dollar gold should only be purchased certified or under the condition that you can get a refund if it won't certify as genuine.

I have not purchased gold coins for just this reason (oh, and I can not afford them) but feel what amac44 has said is great advice. I have a tough time buying something from ebay over a certain price (and gold would be in there) if it is not graded by a well known grading service. It still amazes me how many people grade coins in their basement, put them in a slab, have a name similar to a well known grading company and then sell them at PCGS prices. Just be careful when you buy, but the fact that he is selling only car parts and then has this one single stunner of a coin should send up warning signals. The other things that bothers me is: 1. he only sells one coin and went to all the effort to make a banner for it and 2. the type-o of 1857 ans 1854 in the text, anyone selling a coin would not make such a big blunder. My advice is to run as fast as you can and get away from it unless he will do what Conder101 suggested.
