This variety is an interesting witness of a scandal which shook Peru's Central Bank in 1864. Dionisio Derteano, a senator and member of a commission which oversaw and awarded coinage contracts at the mint illegally authorized his own initial and/or name to be engraved on 1 Sol coins of that year. Approximately 170000 coins were struck bearing this inserting anomaly.
Typical examples show the name 'Derteano' engraved on the coins falling from the cornucopia, as well as the letter 'D' placed in various places on the reverse. Varieties exist.

Upon discovery, the government immediately ordered the coins to be destroyed. However, workers at the mint apparently found it more expedient to individually erase the name using tiny chisels.

Examples today are quite scarce. I have been able to find two examples.
You can see that the names were not completely defaced, and parts still remain. Tiny 'Ds' also appear above the letters FINO and PERUANA on the reverse.
On the first example a tiny D can also be seen on the tail of the cornucopia.

Has anybody ever come across any 'Derteano' Sols of 1864? or have examples to share?

1st Example: Name on bottom row of coins, initials around the legend on the periphery and on the tail of the cornucopia.

Good catch, realeswatcher.
Yes, that one appeared to be a 'Derteano' sol as far as I could tell.

Examples do turn up unattributed. I myself have found two.
However, they are really quite scarce.

In addition to the Sols, the initials "DD" are sometimes found in the cornucopia of the 1/5 Sols. The placement of the two D's is closer on the overdate 1864/3 1/5 Sols than on the plain date.

In all my years of collecting 1/5 Sols, I have only seen (and luckily was able to purchase) one mint state "DD" 1864/3 1/5 Sol, so they are rare. It is an MS 64.

For more info on the Derteano Sols, there is an article by Bao (featuring many photos of UNC Derteano Sols) as well as info in the Horace Flatt books "The Coins of Independent Peru" Volumes 2 and 6.

Derteano also issued Hacienda tokens in 3 denominations in 1878, and there is also a death medal.

Thank you, Feuchtwanger, for posting your 1/5 de Sol DD. That is a very beautiful example.
I was aware of the variety, but have never come across one. As you mention, the 1/5 de Sol Derteanos are quite rare, apparently much more so than the full Sols.

Generally speaking there does not appear to be much literature on the 1864 Derteano sols. I have picked up a few references over the years, including the article by Bao, which you mention. I found that very interesting.
Unfortunately, I do not have Flatt's work.
I also found and interesting description of the various varieties of the 1/5 Sol DD, (which I think I found in the NGC site.)

My latest addition in the area of Peruvian republican coinage was an Arequipa 1/5 Sol. That is a very rare coin as well.

I seem to have the exact same variety you show in example 2 just a lot more worn and the Derteano is not readable; but it matches right down to the die cracks and staggered lettering; what is the value of this coin and is it worth getting graded?
