Grade On 1880-CC Morgan Dollar

Hello.
I had posted this coin before, but with bad quality photos only. Now, I have scans of this coin.

What's the grade? Does it look cleaned? And, is it even authentic (scale says 27.03 g which is 0.3 grams over normal weight but apparently the tolerance is 0.39 grams?).


Also, the reverse is rotated a bit, I don't think this is normal.

Hmmmm, looks suspect. The obverse looks much more worn than the reverse. Lettering looks off, especially the I in Pluribus which seems to almost touch the wheat in the hair. Also the 1 and first 8 on the date looks off. Just my opinion.

My gut is saying fake.. coin just looks off

- Is the reverse rotation a dead giveaway that it's fake?
- And what about the 27.03 gram weight?

If the coin in hand looks like the pic you posted it is either: 1) harshly cleaned; or 2) dipped to death.

It has ZERO eye appeal.

As far as authenticity goes I cannot tell from the posted pictures.

No. Real Morgan dollars can have a rotated die. In fact, there's a whole article on VAMworld about this. Here: http://www.vamworld.com/Morgan+Dollar+Rotated+Dies

It's the details that are the dead giveaway.

Yes, it looks pretty much the same in hand. That's part of why I found it suspect - the color was totally different compared to another silver dollar which I'm sure is authentic.

Thanks for that information. As to the weight, could a real Morgan be 0.3 grams overweight?

Yes I did and it didn't stick.
Though my magnet might have been too weak, it's probably not steel or another magnetic metal (steel would weigh much less I think; weight is higher than normal).

Hopefully it's a fake made out of real silver, but my realistic guess is plated copper.

It's certainly fake, and I wouldn't bet on silver.
