Any Ideas? Was going through an old storage box of years ago, came across this one. It is slightly magnetic, therefore suspect a nickel base coating. Maybe because no mint sets?

My theory on "why" is because they needed to know if they could... er...your theory makes more sense; let's go with what you got...

It would be fun to nickel or chrome plate clad Roosies as part of a high school lab experiment. It certainly wouldn't be hard to do.

It has a bezel on it. It may/may not be chrome plated. The edge is covered.

Thanks crazybo ! Been pretty busy with work and music haven't had a lot of time for anything else. I can't think of a better emergency to have a dime! Do they even have pay toilets any more? I haven't seen any for years.

Back in the early 1980s we had some chromed cents wander in the door in change at our family hardware store. Other stores had the same experience for a while. I remember hearing that an exhibitor at a classic auto meet in Denver handed them out as promo items. I wonder if something like that explains your dime?

Quote: EMERGENCY ONLY for what, pay toilets? Don't leave home without it!" Phone calls. Back in ye olden days before cell phones there were things called "pay phones". After about 1971 the cost to make a local call was a quarter, but from the time when they were invented in the early 20th century until 1971 the cost to make a call was a dime. People were often advised to make sure they always had a dime on them "in case of an emergency" so they could call for help.

Not the one in the EMERGENCY ONLY bezel. And there is no telling when the holder was made. You can put any dime in it.
