I ran across this ebay auction yesterday, and it is a PCGS graded 1972 Ike dollar without a type designation. In the past, did PCGS not attribute the reverse types or could this be an omission error? Thoughts?

I checked the certification number via PCGS certification verify, and it lists it as a Type 3 reverse. This leads me to think that perhaps it is an omission error.

They attribute the reverse type if you ask (and probably pay) them to. If you don't request it you don't get a type designation.

Oh. I just assumed they automatically designated the 1972 Ikes. This is the only typeless 1972 I have seen. Perhaps there are more out there, but why is this particular coin designated a Type 3 on the cert verification page?

Since all three types have different catalog numbers, wouldn't the designation be automatic, even if it's not explicitly stated as "Type N"?

What Conder101 and Alpha2814 said.

I am still new to the whole varieties game. Never knew we had three for 1972 until I joined CCF.

The 72 Ike types are an automatic variety you don't have to pay anything extra for the Type 1/2/3. Pretty much anything in the population reports that has it's own line and isn't a subsection of something else is automatic.

They did do the variety on it since it's showing on the cert page, it just isn't on the label for whatever reason. That's a slab version from over a decade ago with a slightly blurry pic and an obliterated hologram, it looks okay but obviously not perfect conditions to check it.

I've only known of the "major" varieties for which the album companies reserve space in their albums.

I suppose this shows that you can take collecting as far as you want to.
