When searching for bargains on ebay, we sometimes come across a coin that looks so much better than advertised.

More often than not, the coin's picture has that familiar " ebay tilt".

A great example is a coin I just logged onto.

Here's two pictures of the same coin, same auction but the first is taken with the tilt and looks so much better than VF.

At first glance it looks AU and possibly MS.

Then you see the second picture and reality hits you hard.

Have a look and I welcome your comments.

I would think you would appreciate multiple angles presented.

You asked for comments so here are mine.
Firstly if the different pics are on the same listing then you can hardly point a finger. I would not agree that there is anything sinister in this. If there was only one pic then maybe just maybe there could be a possibility of skullduggery.
Secondly taking photos of coins is not as easy as a lot of people think. No matter how good your setup is sooner or later something will go wrong which may not be noticed until transferred to a computer and if you don't have a reasonable editing program won't be noticed until it's actually up for sale. If dealing with a lot of pics it is a nightmare to go back and take a better pic.
Thirdly I think any grader worth his pay would see the coin from all angles.
Fourthly I think anybody buying coins purely on the look of a pic is asking for trouble if they don't understand that most coins aren't perfect.
Fifthly I do agree that when listing an item for sale it is human nature to get the best one, so it is a case of buyer beware.
In summation I think that most sellers do the right thing as best they can without deliberately trying to deceive.

Your point is well taken, but in this instance the seller is doing watchers a big favor.

At first glance it says "EF" on the 2X2.

Can't believe no one noticed that.

It might well be EF. Given the results from TPG, a difference of interpretation of a grade or less would be no big surprise.

Grade notation on the flip is not important to me.

I recently bought an 'EF' Victorian quarter that I had graded as an ms64.

My intention in this post was not to criticise the seller.

As others have stated, this seller did the right thing by providing many pictures.

My only purpose was to show the possible pitfall by making a purchase if only one 'tilting' picture was provided.

It's obvious you have never purchased an EF or AU graded coin on ebay only to have it graded by ICCS as ms63, 64 or 65.

I have had plenty of such coins.

If someone had posted that first 'tilted' picture on this forum and asked 'guess the grade', I would have responded 'anywhere between au50 to ms63'

I doubt others who truly know how ICCS grades, would have said different.

You are taking to much of a gamble doing this on internet pictures. I have done this but at coin shows. I would just avoid the tilt pictures going forward. They are doing this for a reason, to attract buyers like yourself, in my opinion.
