I wonder how the odd dents got in his forehead, nose and chin?
There is also a small section on the reverse polished to a mirror finish...

This happened a lot on the 1968-1972 cents. They increased the strike in 1973 and seemed to fix the issue. (On the 1973 cents you ca see how much more the rim is raised on the cents that year)

Note how much taller the rim is? The previous years the rim was more rounded.
