Muskoarocks
Nice token -- Breton 720; Charlton's PC-5C1; Courteau variety 148 (Rariety 3 on a scale of 1-10).
Technical grade AU-58. The rub on the Pineapples preclude a higher grade.
A cut-and-paste of my research data concerning Courteau variety 148:
148 R-3
Obverse characteristics: Similar to variety 147, but the numeral 4 is closer to the numeral 5,and the Die-Cracks are different.
Note - Variety 148 is easily mistook for variety 147, especially on terminal die-states, as both shew Die-Cracks to several of the same letters. The Die-Cracks are situated differently, and absent both varieties for side-by-side comparison, proper attribution becomes challenging. The primary characteristic diagnostic distinction betwixt varieties 147 and 148 is the numeral 4 of variety 147 is on-line with the left-side of a Denticle, while variety 148 is on-line betwixt the Denticles.
The left end of the Stand of the numeral 4 in the date is on-line betwixt the 3rd and 4th Denticles to the immediate right of the numeral 5.
Note - On less than high-grade specimens, Denticles erode and widen. On such, the numeral 4 appears to be on-line with the right-side of the 3rd Denticle. Even on high-grade specimens the 4 is slightly to the left of the centre of the void betwixt the Denticles. Caution is required.
The numeral 4 is nearer the numeral 5 than is variety 147.
An imaginary line along the right-side of the Upright of the numeral 4 is on-line with the left-section of the Stand of the right Upright of the initial H, below the ground.
An imaginary line along the upper-side of the diagonal of the numeral 4 extends to the nadir of the Base of the Leg of the Ampersand, below the ground.
The Man's left Foot is Perfect.
The outline of the left Wing of the Dragon is Perfect.
Two bold horizontal lines are below the left Wing of the Dragon.
A fork is below the Man's right Arm. The lower branch is wider, the upper branch is slightly the longer.
The left Bridle Rein shews.
The Knob to the Dagger-Hilt is nearly round.
The outline of the Belly of the Horse is double-cut.
The left Leg of the Dragon is detached from the Body of the Dragon.
From broken dies.
A Die-Crack is to the left ground.
This straight diagonal Die-Crack is from atop the centre of the 2nd Denticle to the immediate left of the left Rosette, extending through the left section of the ground (a short distance to the right of the tip of the ground).
Latter die-states of the die have the Die-Crack forking upon exiting the ground.
The left branch extends through the stones atop the ground and exits to the tip of the Tail of the Horse. The primary branch extends through the stones and continues through the lumber plank above the ground, and exits through the Haunch of the Horse.
Terminal die-states have the left branch exiting the lower section of the Tail of the Horse.
A forked Die-Crack is to the N in BANK.
This Die-Crack is from the centre of the Denticle above the left-side of the left Upright of the N in BANK, extending to the left-section of the Serif of the same Upright. At the base of the same letter, the Die-Crack forks. The left branch extends through the Stands of the A in the same word. A branch extend from this Die-Crack near the underside of the right end of the Stand of the right Leg of the same A. This branch extends to the upper section of the outer middle curve of the Tail of the Horse and continues through the same Tail, joins to the Die-Crack to the left ground. The primary Die-Crack extends through both Stands of the same letter, and upon exiting the left Stand, curves to through the mid-section of the lower outer curve of the Tail of the Horse and joins to the Die-Crack previously discussed (to the left ground).
The right branch of the primary Die-Crack forks immediately upon exiting the Stand of the left Upright of the same N. Two branches extend to the lower section of the Diagonal of the same letter. The Die-Crack exits the lower section of the right Upright of the same letter, and continues through the Stand of the Upright of the K in the same word, exiting the lower section of the right-side of the same Stand and continuing to the lower section of the 4th Mantle Fold, and meandering through the Mantle, exiting the 1st Mantle Fold and fading into the field.
A Die-Crack is to the you in UPPER.
This Die-Crack is from betwixt the Denticles above and to the left of the left Upright of the you in UPPER, extending to the left-side of the Serif of the same Upright, exiting the bottom of the left-side of the same letter, and extending to t0he Mantle Straps. The area betwixt the Denticles is starting to block.
A Die-Crack is from the Snout of the Horse.
This Die-Crack is from the Snout of the Horse, extending to the mid-section of the curve of the C in CANADA, and continuing to the Stand of the left Leg of the A in the same word.
Note - This Die-Crack was not mentioned by Doctor Courteau.
A Die-Crack is to the N in CANADA.
This Die-Crack is from the right corner of the Denticle to the immediate left of the N in CANADA, extending to the left end of the Serif of the same letter, running parallel to the left Upright of the same letter, and exiting to the upper section of the Hoof of the left Leg of the Horse.
Note - This Die-Crack was not mentioned by Doctor Courteau.
A forked Die-Crack is to the Hoof of the Horse.
This forked Die-Crack is from the left section of the Stand of the left Leg of the 2nd A in CANADA. The primary branch extends to the tip of the Hoof of the left Foreleg of the Horse. The left branch extends perpendicularly (from about 1/3 the distance to the Hoof), and extends through the tip of the Ear of the Dragon and exits to the tip of the middle Claw of the right forepaw of the Dragon.
Note - This Die-Crack was not mentioned by Doctor Courteau.
A Die-Crack is to the 3rd A in CANADA.
This Die-Crack is from along the left-side of the Denticle above the left Leg of the 3rd A in CANADA, extending to the upper left corner of the same letter, through the Cross Bar and right-side of the Stand of the same Leg, and through the tip of the centre Claw of the left Paw of the Dragon, and exiting to the Wrist of the right Forearm of the Dragon.
Note - This Die-Crack was not mentioned by Doctor Courteau.
A Die-Crack is to the right ground.
This short Die-Crack is from the underside of the Stand of the right Leg of the 3rd A in CANADA, extending to the tip of the right ground.
Note - This Die-Crack was not mentioned by Doctor Courteau.
Two parallel Die-Cracks are to the right Rosette.
Two parallel Die-Cracks run from the right side of the right Leg of the 3rd A in CANADA. The lower Die-Crack is on-line with the Cross-bar of the same letter, and extends through the upper Lobe of the right Rosette, and continues toward the numeral 4. The upper Die-Crack emerges from the mid-section of the same Leg, and continues into the field toward the same Rosette.
Some ensamples exhibit Die-Crash marks.
Multiple paralleling strikings of the Anchor Shaft are behind the Man's Back. Strikings of segments of the Anchor Rope dots span the wings of the Dragon.
Machine or Shift Entry Doubling ensamples are also encountered.
Reverse characteristics: The same as variety 147, but always having the Die-Crack to the A in BANK.
The Dot within the right Rosette is Arrow-head shaped, of normal size, and weakly joined by a Stem to the upper right inner corner. The Dot is closer to lower right inner corner than the upper left corner.
The Stand of the T in TOKEN is Perfect.
The Stand of the N in TOKEN is Perfect.
The Union Jack is Perfect.
The St. Andrew's Cross frame is missing.
The extreme upper end of the St. Andrew's Cross frame shews as a small nodule.
The hole in the Battle Axe appears as a large impression.
The inner ornamental Balls are disconnected from the Cornucopia.
Two normal sized squiggly Dots, followed by a line having two curves are betwixt the Feather and Anchor Shaft.
The Anchor Rope ends with one Dot and a thin line.
The lower right-side ornamental Dot is present.
The Anchor Ring is perfect.
Note - Interestingly, the reverse Die-Clash Mark found on variety 147 is not evident on variety 148. Terminal die states of variety 147 (exhibiting the Die-Crack to the A in BANK) maintain the Die-Clash. Variety 148 is from this terminal die state of variety 147. During transition, the Die-Clash disappeared.
From broken dies.
A Die-Crack is to the A in BANK.
This long jagged forked Die-Crack is from the left-side of the Denticle above the centre of the A in BANK, extending into the field, paralleling the right-side of the right Leg of the same letter. On-line with the mid section of the upper section of the right Leg of the same letter, the Die-Crack forks. The lower branch extends to the right-side of the same Leg, on-line with the cross bar.
The upper branch curves through the lower end of the left Upright of the N in the same word, and extends to the lower left-side of the lower left-side Crown Jewel, and continues through the upper section of the Crown, exiting the upper right-side of the Globular ornament, and continuing to the tip of the Shield, and exiting the lower right corner of the same Shield, and continuing
through the Stand of the left Upright of the N in TOKEN, and through the mid-section of the right Upright of the same letter, and terminating at the right corner of the upper Lobe of the right Rosette.
Latter die states have the Die-Crack to the branch of the A in BANK, extending through the right Leg of the same letter, and exiting to the Sword tip.
Note - When referencing variety 147, Doctor Courteau makes especial note that specimens shewing this Die-Crack do not shew the St. Andrew's Cross frame. This Die-Crack is found on the terminal die state of the 147 die. Thus variety 148 was struck from the terminal state 147 die.
When referencing variety 148, Doctor Courteau did not specifically indicate the presence of the St. Andrew's Cross frame, save to say all variety 148's shew the characteristic diagnostic Die-Crack. Again, the author cannot confirm this premise as all of the specimens privy to the author shewing this Die-Crack also shews the upper section of the St. Andrew's Cross frame, howbeit not fully struck.
A Die-Crack is to the Y in PENNY.
This Die-Crack is from along the left-side of the Denticle below the right-side of the Stand of the Y in PENNY, extending upward, touching the right end of the same Stand, and continuing through the mid-section of the right Arm of the same letter, exiting the centre of the Serif of the same Arm, and extending to the middle Grass Blades of the right Cornucopia. The Die-Crack turns leftward, and continues along the inside of the lower edge of the right Cornucopias, forking and re-merging, and continuing along the inside of the lower edge of the left Cornucopia, and through the left-side of the fruits of the left Cornucopia, and extending to the lower left-side of the Upright of the B in BANK, and continues through the Stands of the A in the same word.
Terminal die-states shew the Die-Crack continuing to the lower section of the left Upright of the N in the same word.
A Die-Crack is to the Shield.
This Die-Crack is from the upper right-side of the Globe atop the Crown, extending into the field to the upper corner of the Shield.
Terminal die-states have shew the Die-Crack exiting the lower right corner of the Shield, and extending through the Stand of the left Upright of the N in TOKEN, and the lower section of the right Upright of the same letter, and extending to the right corner of the upper Lobe of the right Rosette.
Note - This Die-Crack was not mentioned by Doctor Courteau.
Note - This Die-Crack may be a continuation of the Die-Crack to the Crown (previously discussed).
Thus:
148 A Die-Crack is to the A in BANK (reverse).
Die-Crack as above, plus a Die-Crack is to the Y in PENNY.
Die-Cracks as above, plus a Die-Crack is to the Crown.
148A Die-Cracks as above, plus a Die-Crack is to the left ground.
Die-Cracks as above, plus a Die-Crack is to the Shield.
148B Die-Crack as above, plus a Die-Crack is to the you in UPPER.
Die-Cracks as above, plus a Die-Crack is to the 3rd A in CANADA.
Die-Cracks as above, plus a Die-Crack is to the Mantle.
148C Die-Cracks as above, plus a Die-Crack is to the N in BANK (obverse).
Die-Cracks as above, plus a Die-Crack is to the N in CANADA.
Die-Cracks as above, plus a Die-Crack is to the Hoof of the Horse.
Die-Cracks as above, plus a Die-Crack is to the right Rosette.
Note - Some Die-Cracks were not mentioned by Doctor Courteau
This is the Die-Crack progression.
