2 PCGS graded dimes. How do you know if the coin is silver or not. Doesn't say silver on the coin and the dimes look the same. Sorry I don't have 2 of the same year but I noticed same year dime looks the same as the silver dime. All dimes are s-mints I see but can't tell difference from there

Definitely 10% copper in the top and 91.67% copper in the bottom one.

@BP, this may be useful info from cointrackers.com:

Additional Info: This proof [the 1980 S] contains no silver, it was not until 1992 that the US mint started back minting silver proof dimes, and even then most were not silver proofs.

Don't want to know about these coins in particular, want to know how you can tell if a coin is silver by looking at it

The 1980-S is a clad dime. They didn't make silver dimes that year.

Silver coins that are fairly clean are much lighter in color when viewed at a angle.
Rest in Peace

That's the easiest way to tell. If you see copper color on the edge, then it is clad. If it's all silver colored (and the coin isn't plated!) then it's silver.

There is also the tissue test. It works for me and is worth checking out, especially for coins in slabs or OGP lenses.

For raw coins, weight is a also a good way to tell. Compare the weight to the spec for each along with other diagnostics and it should be clear which it is.

Single layer of facial tissue Use a known silver on one side and put them side by side. You can put it over an album page and it will show you the silver ones with the whiter color.

Here is another example of the tissue test. I added words and fonts with colors this time.
