*** Edited by Staff to Add Year / Mintmark / Denomination to Title. Titles are Important! ***

I came across this one going through my stash of 2017P's. The shoulder and neck line looks as if it's the line from the shield on back but the line from the sheild does not go up towards the W in "WE". The spot on the rim looks to be PMD. Any help is appreciated. Also would this be a keeper?
Thanks, Kevin in CT.

Looks more like linear plating bubble - but still a cool find.

tho it almost lines up with clash mark from the shield I couldn't see that strong an effect there especially without a trace of clash in the fields

You should include the date, mintmark, and the denomination in your titles.

Why Topic Titles are Important

The title of your topic is very important. Let's say you need help attributing an 1896 Morgan Dollar....

  • Horrendous: Help!

  • Bad: Need help with coin

  • Better: Need help with Morgan Dollar

  • Good: Need help with 1896 Morgan Dollar

  • Awesome: Need help with VAM on 1896 Morgan Dollar

This enables the members with expertise pertaining to your question to easily find and answer your question. The title of the topic also becomes the title of the topic's web page, which enables us to attract more collectors to the site. The more members we have, the more we learn.
Rest in Peace

A clash wouldn't go that deep into the details w/o totally destroying the die and also notice above head in same linear angle. Linear Plating Bubble caused by debris between layers.

That is, perhaps, the most interesting linear plating bubble I've seen. It looks like rod entered Lincoln's head behind his ear and came out the top of his head (or vise versa). I like it.

Could also be a die gouge, but plating bubble seems most likely

I agree with a die scratch. Note how is disappears behind the bust? That tells me that the fields were affected. Of then on a linear plating bubble, it will flow over the bust or device that gets in the way.

So if I wanted to place this in a 2x2 how would I title this one?

U could carefully try taking a tooothpick to it. If it don't deflate or bust then it's what coop seems to think a die gouge/scratch most likely

I would probably not save it if it is just a die scratch or a linear plating bubble. Just knowing what it was would be enough for me. (learning about coins is not like reading a book. It more of a cross word puzzle. You find something strange, but know what it is/is not, then you start to learn more. If it is not a variety, I don't save, unless they would be reference material to educate other new collectors.

With these, it's more about knowing what it is. Either way, there's no value above face. Keep it if you like it. It's a tiny investment.
