Nero Silver Denarius Coin 3 grams Got it for a good deal too( well under $100 US. and this is the most expensive coin I ever bought- I'm a cheapskate and prefer worn coins LOL) Edited by Matt2018 02/10/2018 11:18 pm

Denarii of Nero are scarce-ish; they are worth approximately four times as much as common denarii of other Emperors in equivalent condition. Price OK.
Some pimpling on the fields in the devices, but I think it is genuine anyway; probably just the way it has turned out, after cleaning, which would have been needed after recovery from burial.

Nice coin. I especially like the portrait of Nero. Definitely appears a victim of the "Roman High Society Life" I can see the expression of a "bully" on his face too. Or am I just imagining it all...? Squire

May I ask, what sort of auction? All coins? All ancients? Or a general estate type sale where this just happened to be in there? In any case, great eye on your part t pick this one out.

I'm still trying to upgrade mine. I got this one for under $50 so I'm not complaining, but it's a brutal example!

travel coin thats still nice.under 50 aint bad for that. Hell, if you want to sell it on ebay for 60 if take it off your hands! I prefer the coins that have some wear and tear. Those mint coins always look too fake- and many are- fooling even the best experts out there.

They make worn looking fakes also. So look out! There's no safe area. The only thing you can do is to educate yourself as to what to look for. As far as your coin,I believe it's genuine. I've bought from them before. I am no expert, but the more I hang out and get some pointers from forum members, the better I'm getting. I'm still apprehensive on big purchases.
Monday may be my big one - details to follow...

thanks travel, yeah I know but its a heck of a lot more difficult. I dont spend alot of money on coins- I prefer to get oned in only good condition for $1 to about 30 bucks. I doubt they will put all that work into making something old for so little reward( some I get for 5 bucks- who is going to go to all that trouble to make a coin look so antique for 5 measly bucks?!Not even worth the effort.
thats why I stay away from ones more than 100 bucks( pretty much my limit)
