When I get a bunch of coins, I immediately pull out all of the obvious culls. Unfortunately, this was one such coin from my latest batch. It seems to be covered in varnish or shellac (or who knows what) that is worn off in some places. It is nasty looking, but I'll take it, as it is my first 1917-P LWC 1DO-001 in any condition.

Give it a soak in pure acetone for a few hours per side - see if that helps it.
Rest in Peace

It will take a good 6-12 hrs to loosen the varnish.

That should clean up nicely. The goop probably helped preserve the coin some. Too bad about that smashed area, but still a nice one to find.

Soaking for several hours in pure Acetone should help. Then the next option I guess would be Verdicare.
What a sweet find!

Still a great find! And don't worry too much about the dried up goop. It can be loosened up and removed by Acetone. Give it a long 6 hour bath in Acetone and check on it when 6 hours passes.
Errers and Varietys.
Rest in Peace

That's a nice find in any condition. I've never found one in the wild. Finding a scarce one like that is what makes all of us incurable hunters!
