Very high mintage coin - this was the second year of cupro-nickel replacing silver, and it was a top mintage year for all denominations.

These florins circulated until 1992 as 10p pieces, but were withdrawn that year when the 10p was reduced to its present size.

I can still find them in this sort of condition for face value in the junk bin at my LCS, but it would be interesting to know how this one crossed the Atlantic!

@NumisRob, those types are extremely common in "junk" bins here in Canada. So common that nobody really wants them very much. I have a complete year set from junk bins. I suspect that they just came over as tourist souvenirs. There has been such heavy traffic between Canada and the UK for so long, they are here in the 10s of thousands I am sure.

Here in the UK they are so common I throw them into a box until I have enough to take to the bank. They can still be cashed in at 10p each, but only at some banks, if you have an account there, and if you can bring them in £5 bags.
Two years earlier - 1946 and earlier - were 50% silver and so a very different ball game. I regularly see job lots at auctions which look great until you realise all the silver has gone - some dealer unloading the unsaleable residue.
