1888-S Morgan, 1926-S Peace, And 1861 25cent...the Coins My Dad Left Me

My dad recently died. He was a coin collector. I liked them but wasn't a collector. I was just going to sell at some time, but in January I decided to collect and I have got the bug probably worse than anyone. My dad wanted some coins to be certified and I told him I would. He didn't live long enough to see their grade as it takes a long time to send off and receive. I know he would not be happy with these grades. 1888-s is full of luster and looks MS all the way. Why would anyone clean this coin? Is it really cleaned? 1926-s Peace is full of luster, seems ms 62-63, and the quarter my dad loved. Thought it was a killer-ms 64-65. He would be bummed. What is wizzed?

All three coins were graded accurately. The 1888-S Morgan dollar has been cleaned, as stated by ANACS. The 1861 quarter looks whizzed, just as ANACS said. The Peace dollar was graded accurately as well.

The 1888-S Morgan dollar looks like it was dipped in a silver cleaner for too long.

Wear is evident on the Peace dollar. AU-55 is correct.

Whizzing refers to a fine brush used (often attached to a drill) to polish the coin. Your 1861 quarter has the earmarks of being whizzed.

I can provide you with images of coins that got the same grade, but without a Details designation.

Learning grading can be and almost always is a very long road to accuracy. The vast majority of casual collectors never get there or become confident in that ability.

Learning a single series is the best step to learning grading.

There is nothing "wrong" with those specifications given by ANACS. It is just plain rare for a first submission to go as expected.

You are on the right path giving us excellent questions and great photos.

Your dad would be proud of you for approaching a difficult subject with the desire to learn.

With regard to the details grades on two of your coins, I wouldn't stress about it so much. The coins still have tons of sentimental value, right?

Yes They all do, I got about 4 other coins graded also that my dad wanted done. He left me a nice starter coin collection and I have gone nuts and bought a ton of coins. Wondering were everybody buys their coins?

I buy coins from ebay and the local coin shop.

I think all three coins look better than the holdered grade. Regardless of what anyone says, they belonged to your father, he loved them, and if I were you, I would love them too. I suspect you do. Your father left you something to build on. I think he would be proud if you made the collection better through your love of learning and coins. Congratulations on your patrimony!
