My newest crusty original. Don't let the photos and toning fool you, it is lusterous throughout. Have at it....

Hard to tell what that toning might be covering. MS65?

Beefer ... I'm truly enjoying your passion for this series ... you are indeed collecting coins that many can only dream about ... and I suppose well on your way to type set completion. Well done in all of that. That said ... this Grant does not possess eye appeal to me ... regardless of grade. The mottled and crusty toning surfaces to me are a distraction ... and perhaps hiding some surface issues that the graders did not view? Tough to offer a grade opinion despite the excellent photos ... NGC MS64 is my best guess.

Quote: The mottled and crusty toning surfaces to me are a distraction about the obverse, but that reverse is a WOW to me I'll go a bit higher that most of the folks and put this one at MS66.

I bet it looks much nicer in hand. Hard to capture the luster through that toning. I'd say MS-65.

Nickelsearcher - thanks for the kind words. Yes, I'm 5 away from the 50 set. My set is actually 52, as I include the Norse Medal and the Washington 25¢ in the series (I know, I know). I'm also trying to get copies of what I have raw in slabs, such as this Grant.
I was uncertain about the toning on this coin until I had it in hand. It has a really attractive golden bronze to it, and looks a lot like a bronze medal. The toning is very smooth across the coin, so it almost looks like that's how it was supposed to be.

Quote: I got one right for a change You are indeed learning jbuck ... good for the spirit indeed. Me as well ... quoting myself below: Quote: NGC MS64 is my best guess. All that said ... the OP photos show to my eye a coin lacking eye appeal ... hopeful that Beffer can someday not only complete this quest ... but also show us the 'bronze toning' in this otherwise lovely example.

The PVC damage on the obverse is unfortunate.
Luckily it got a straight grade slab.
