Sorry this hijack. Not sure if this is the correct place. Tried searching at this post is one of the closest.

I have gotten a few coins from my uncle during Chinese new year and he is a coin collector.

He asked me to pick a few from his collections and I picked this and he said it is very very valuable and gave it to me together with explaining the history.

Just want to see if this coin is the real deal as he claims?
Need some help guys. Thanks!!

Welcome to coincommunity, Planecherrycup.

The coin shown unfortunately is not genuine. The biggest giveaway is the character "ben shen" which does not exist in genuine coins. The overall look of the coin does not look silver either.

From what I understand, Ben Shen has a history to it. Apparently there was a magistrate who took over hupeh and wanted to circulate the coin only within hupeh only. Thus they engraved "Ben Shen" into the coins.

In the past, 1 silver coins is equivalent to 1000 bronze? However, the magistrate changed the exchange rate to 1200 bronze per silver coin and the citizens were unhappy. Thus, all the coins were scrapped and melted. Only 400 sample pieces were kept in storage, thus extremely rare....

Well color wise. Picture's color accuracy can varies depends on lighting.

Very interesting. Never knew about it.

At this point of time, I find it more unlikely for it to be genuine. This is one of the articles I looked up.

The details are just not right. As counterfeiters proactively look for reasons why their wares are not genuine, I will not go into exact details of what is wrong.

Why even bother pointing out characters or such? The "texture" of the piece is decidedly recent Chinese fake.
